[1] Storing paper mail uses more physical space than storing e-mail. However, paper is a reliable storage medium and is not necessarily dependent on any modern technologies. Documents printed on most common paper and left intact for one hundred years will still be easily readable. In contrast, most electronic storage degrades much faster. Worse, devices that can read a particular electronic storage medium may be difficult to find and use even a decade or two after their introduction. [2] Some online groups also use paper mail through regular gifts and cards. In some countries, services are available to print and deliver emails to those unable to receive email, such as the elderly. Letter Wise is one such service in the USA; in the UK, Royal Mail offers a similar service. [3] Snail mail is also a term used in reference to pen – palling. Snail mail pen – pals communicate with one another through the postal system, rather than on the Internet which is becoming the standard form of communication. There are pen – pal agencies that specialize in snail mail including Global Pen – friends. [4] Snail mail is used to refer to letters and documents carried by usual postal delivery services. “Snail” in its name describes its slow speed. Therefore, the whole phrase refers to the lad – time between the sending of a letter and its receipt, versus the virtually instantaneous sending and delivery of its electronic equivalent, e-mail. It is also known, more neutrally, as paper mail, postal mail, or land mail. 1. The word intact in paragraph 1 is synonymous with___. A. untouched B. unread C. undisturbed D. unsent 2. The main idea of this passage is ___. A. the origin of Snail mail B. different names of Snail mail C. overview of Snail mail D. snail mail versus Email 5. The four paragraphs above are not in correct order. The correct order is___. A. 1-4-3-2 B. 4-1-3-2 C. 2-1-4-3 D. 1-3-4-2 Exercise 8. Read the passage carefully, then choose the correct answers. Sometimes mail arrives at the post office, and it is impossible to deliver the mail. Perhaps there is an inadequate or illegible address and no return address. The post office cannot just throw this mail away, so this becomes "dead mail." This "dead mail" is sent to one of the U.S. Postal Service's dead mail offices in Atlanta, New York, Philadelphia, St. Paul, or San Francisco. Seventy- five million pieces of mail can end up in the dead mail office in one year. The staff of the dead mail offices have a variety of ways to deal with all of these pieces of dead mail. First of all, they look for clues that can help them deliver the mail; they open packages in the hope that something inside will show where the package came from or is going to. Dead mail will also be listed on a computer so that people can call in and check to see if a missing item is there. However, all of this mail cannot simply be stored forever; there is just too much of it. When a lot of dead mail has piled up, the dead mail offices hold public auctions. Every three months, the public is invited in and bins containing items found in dead mail packages are sold to the highest bidder.
